Cleo has been pretty good from the time we brought her home. We have a cat cage (looks similar to a bird cage), so I think that helps. I would suggest covering the box/cage they are in with a towel or something like that so they can't see out. Sometimes that is what upsets the cat. We even take Cleo up to my Mum's place, nearly 2 hours away!

Let's talk aboout REAL travel. I am planning a move this summer from Tokyo to Saskatchewan (central Canada).
I have never flown with a cat before. what are some do's and don'ts??
It is a loooong flight. first leg is 9-10hrs. (that's in the air--not accounting for the time in the cage before the flight (maybe four hours).

TasMania, i bought my cat back to New Zealand with me from London, nearly 6 years ago, she was in the cage for about 34 hours, one thing I was told was not to sedate her as she would wake up mid-flight and panic, so she was fully awake the whole time, and for an old cat (12 years) she travelled really well, it was me who stressed the whole flight, as until I arrived in New Zealand, I didn't even know if she was on the same flight as me (due to a total muck up with vets back in England), when I went over to the pick-up point, there she was, then it was a mad dash over to our next flight. Don't feed him/her the day you fly as less food in their system reduces the need to want to go to the toilet. Also make sure he/she has a decent cage to travel in and throw something they are attached to, like their blanket or a toy, I had a small sheepskin rug (it was small) and that went in her cage. Hope all works out for you and the cat in the travels |

My cat just loves to travel. She loves riding in the car but right when we stop and she heres the barking from the vet, its a struggle getting her in there. Maybe the cage freaks her out my cat got a little freaked out. So we bought a cat harnse and a leash and we take her in the car and the vet with that. and she just loves it. |

Vet clinics and large scale pet stores sell cat pheromones. These pheromones replicate the scent cats put off when they are happy and content. So in essence (no pun intended) they trick the brain into thinking everything is hunky dory and has a very calming effect on them. You may want to try spraying some in your cat's kennel. They also make a plug-in "air freshener" type. It plugs into an outlet on the wall and scents an entire room with hunky doriness - good for bringing a cat into a new environment or introducing a new cat. |
