I have a question I took in a stray cat and she had kittens, at the moment I have all of them all of them are female including the mother. I've only had dogs in my life so I'm new to owning cats. I read a book saying male cats will bite the neck of a female and mount it when they're in heat. Well my kittens are all 5 months and the mother is about 14 or 15 months. I'm getting them all spayed next month but it worries me that they mount each other. I wasn't sure if that's normal or they're playing or maybe one is a male and if that's the case I don't want any of them getting pregnant. I took all of them to an animal shelter i volunteer at and a person checked them out and said they're all females but it seems weird. Any suggestions?

You know...

Thats perfectcally normal... I think

My neighbor's kittens did the same thing to each other

there all females and she has 12!

I would keep the kittens in a seperate room for 2 or 3 days. Just divide them into 2 groups and watch them. They should stop. I think they're just playing. Check websites on kitten behavior. THEY ARE NOT IN HEAT! I gaurentee that!

Good luck

Just like with dogs mounting in not just a sexual behavior but also a dominance behavior. They mount each other to also say who is in charge. If you notice one or two of the kittens are probably the targets of this behavior as they are the least dominant in the clowder.

Moshie - There are many ways to bath a cat some even with dry products, like warm oats. I like to give my cats a bath in the bath tub every 1 - 3 months depending on how dirty they are. You should probably clip their claws before putting them in warm water to prevent you from getting scratched. I also fill the tub before bringing the cat into the room and I uncap the pet shampoo. THen I'll take the cats two front paws in my left hand and hold them by the scruff of their neck with the right hand and lift the cat into the tub. At that point I will talk sweetly and calmly to the cat and "pet" the water onto their coat. Then I will add shampoo to the top of the head and neck and shampoo thoroughly. Be careful not to get any shampoo in the cats eyes and avoid getting water in the cats ears. I add shampoo down the spine of the cat and massage the shampoo in. Then I usually rinse the cat off towel dry, brush and groom ^_^ hope that helps.
