I need all the suggestions I can get. My 5 year old cat is sulking and hissing at my kitten. I have a separate bedroom setup for my new kitten until she gets bigger. Does anyone have any ideas how to smooth the transition. The whole reason behind getting a new cat was to keep the other company. I am giving special attention to both cats. How do I get them to bond together with out killing each other.

Are things getting any better yet? I really have no advice -- my old Tortoiseshell is very mean to other cats, she has never been able to get along with others.. I do know that cats have a better chance of being friends if they start out together as kittens and often cats of the same sex will be more competitive (but that probably doesn't apply to a small kitten). The kitten will probably idolize the cat and hopefully the cat will learn to love the kitten eventually. I don't know if you bring a toy in like one of those feathers on a string on a stick - that could help or it may hurt - I don't know! Sorry this post is really no help. :-/ Catnip? On the other hand, our big cat family is unbelievably cool with strange cats visiting the yard - I've never seen anything like that - probably because they are already so well socialized with each other. I guess if a single cat is raised alone and meets another cat at an older age, they may be a lot less likely to accept the new cat than one that grew up around other cats.

Things are getting better, slowly... lol. Mommy has a water bottle handy if they get too hissy. But they have actually come nose to nose today without hissing (very good sign) so I still think there is a chance they will either get along or learn to tolerate each other. Thanks for asking. Not sure why it is lined out. kinda funny.

If you've ever had to introduce a second cat into the home, you'll find this pretty funny:
